MMA Training On A Shoestring

I know it can be a real pain to find a place to train at. Unless you live in a big city, finding good MMA instruction can be difficult.

So here is the next best thing. Do what I did, start a little garage dojo and get some friends over. Hang a bag, lay down some mats, and go at it!

For instruction put a TV or computer out there and use MMA training DVDs on Muay Thai, BJJ, or plain MMA. That is the way to go!

Train, practice, and have a blast!

Muay Thai Workouts: 5 Major Tips To Remember When Learning the Thai Kick

A fantastic Thai kick is an impressive weapon to have in your arsenal. But when you want to have a good kick, you need proper technique.

These are 5 things to remember when throwing your Muay Thai kick:

Tip #1 Proper Distance - To do the Muay Thai kick correctly, you should throw it when your opponent is just beyond your punching range. If you can lean and touch your opponent with your hand, then you know your distance is correct.

Tip #2 Step and Lean - For optimum power, step into the Muay Thai kick at a 45 degree angle with your base leg. Stepping at an angle like this yields a lot more power than does stepping directly forwards. Avoid stepping flat-footed, step with the balls of your feet instead.

Tip #3 Rotation - Turn your supporting foot.Move your feet, hips and shoulders together as ONE UNIT! There should never be any twist to your body. TURN SIDEWAYS when kicking! Think of it this way, your hips should be turned towards your opponent and your chest facing sideways too when the kick lands. Don't snap the kick, keep the leg loose and swing the whole leg. Your leg should stay relaxed and only slightly bent during the kick. As you turn and kick, counterbalance yourself by leaning away a little from the kicking leg.

Tip #4 Impact - Hit with the shinbone! Also, the follow through is VERY Crucial. DON'T STOP AT THE SURFACE OF THE TARGET! MAKE SURE TO FOLLOW THROUGH! The follow through is probably the most important facet of this kick. Swing your leg like a baseball bat and swing all the way through the target, trying to break through everything in its path. Turn your torso into the target (if the kicker had a T-shirt with something written on the back, the pad holder should almost be able to read what it says!).

Tip #5 Hand Placement - A couple of points: Keep the rear hand up to protect your facial area. The lead arm (kicking arm) swings back for balance. Make sure you keep your lead shoulder up though. So remember, rear hand up for defense, lead hand swings back for balance.

The target for this kick can be the inner or outer thigh, body, or head. After impact, bounce back and return to your stance.
